We Need a Huge Turn Around in the US Educational System Essay

â€Å"According to the pro-education reform documentary Waiting for Superman, one out of every 57 doctors loses his or her license to practice medicine. One out of every 97 lawyers loses their license to practice law. In many major cities, only one out of 1,000 teachers is fired for performance-related reasons. Why? Tenure.† Tenure for elementary school teachers is a union contract that offers academic freedom and job security. It does not necessarily guarantee lifetime employment but it does make the firing process extremely timely and equally as costly. It assures that if a teacher must be fired the he or she is guaranteed due process and will be fired for just cause. The original need for tenure during the late 19th century was to protect†¦show more content†¦Unfortunately, teachers have not been taking this process seriously because administrators have not been adequate through the process. Poor teachers as well as excellent ones have not been trying hard to empre ss their authorities because they know that no matter what it is almost impossible for them not to receive tenure. They have undoubtedly figured out that they are going to be evaluated one good time for about an half an hour and granted the benefit of tenure, and from there on continue to administer satisfactory work into classroom to the students depending on them for knowledge. Initially tenure served the sole purpose of protecting teachers who were sought as troublemakers or those who took risks in education and who did not what to adhere to the status quo. Teachers should get back to that kind of teaching. Teaching with confidence and risk taking to elevate and enhance learning. Tenure should get back to protecting these kinds of teachers. Tenure is currently protecting and awarding the cookie cutter teacher that comes to class and transfers what is in the textbook to the board. When instead, it should be awarding the teacher that goes the extra mile; tenure should award the tea cher that is presenting money management to third graders in ways that he or she can comprehend even thought the book’s activity is a worksheet asking the students how much does four dimes equal.
